That was the first place I heard of Bananas Foster, a down home N'awlins specialty. Charity and I tried to find recipies, but they always involved rum. Well, I think this Ice Cream should be forbidden by the word of wisdom too, because the effect on the body is just as awful. Oh, but the way it tastes! I had an ex-something that used to say that Ice Cream calories don't count because all it's good for is filling in the cracks in your stomach. Circuitous logic, but for this stuff, any plausible excuse with which I can justify my behavior is good enough for me. I am such a cliche.

Ok, am I ashamed to admit that every Friday night at 10 pm you will find me plunked infront of the TV watching Numbers, that awful show? Yes.

I actually don't give a crap about the plots, and am just watching it for Rob Morrow. I guess I'm a late comer to the fanclub. Never saw any of the Northern Exposure shows, although I guess I could check them out now on DVD. What keeps me from doing that though is John Corbett. He of Not-Sexy-Aidan fame. Except I will say that Aidan was HOT the second time he and Carrie got together, but I digress.

Can I be even more ashamed that I was surfing Oprah's website on such a deep and penetrating level, that I found Rob's bookshelf? I was impressed that the Da Vinci Code was not on it. Although Joseph Campbell is a tough call, cause it either means he's into lit crit, or it means he's trying to hide the fact that he's an inveterate Star Wars geek. The latter, not so sexy. What is it with this guy and Patrick Dempsey? I'm a total late comer to both, and we just can't get enough of them. Patric Dempsey even as a geeky nerdling in Can't Buy Me Love is DIVINE! But I will not watch that crappy Grey's Anatomy. Even though it landed Patrick on the cover of TV Guide as sexiest guy on TV. That I can agree with. Well, maybe in a tie with Rob Morrow.

The first thing you learn in Econ 150 @ BYU is that it pays to specialize. That's why I'm so grateful that someone out there finally got a site up selling these retro kitschy travel pillows, so I don't have to make one. Ever since Kim Bassinger's character in LA Confidential had one on her bed, I've coveted one. But they're $136!!!! Pricey. And how's this for math....the California pillow apparently takes 40 hours to stitch by hand. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that means that someone's getting paid $3.40 an hour to stitch...and that's not even including materials or a profit margin. Something's fishy....I don't know if I quite believe that it's hand stitched. And you thought english majors couldn't do math.

And it's kinda cheezy to have an LA pillow living in LA. So maybe I can get it for my sister as a housewarming gift when she moves to Vegas. I could get the Ski Colorado one for myself. Or the France or Italy one. Again when I got mo papes.

So Tuesday night was the season premiere of Queer Eye featuring The Boston Red Sox. I NEVER watch Queer Eye, but had to admit the concept was intriguing. So Jessie and I were in place for some good old down home mullets and homophobia. Man those Sox were uncomfortable. Carson had a few bon mots, but also some ideas that were a little too outré. Like Johnny Damon's stripe on stripe ensemble--Carson trying way too hard. Although I will grant that with a little grooming...I could see what Sherpa sees in Damon. Carson is just way more into pink than any human has a right to be. That's my dose of Queer Eye for the year.

This is my gorgeous spring flower spray that I made for my brother's wedding with Apricot branches, tuberoses, varicolored roses and...hmmm...let's see what else... baby calla lillies, and whatever those tiny flowers were. Those were the most expensive of the lot. I have to say I'm very proud of it.

Los Angeles Dodgers Fan Code of Conduct

This isn't going to turn into DODGERBLOG, I swear, but I couldn't believe it when I heard on the radio today that there is now an 11 point Fan Code of Conduct that will be posted all over Dodger Stadium.

In the light of recent interactions between players and fans in professional sports, I can see how this might be a wise thing. But it also really bums me out, because it means an evening with 1500 of your closest friends in the Left Field Pavillion isn't going to be what it used to be.

Granted, the last time I was there two weekends ago, I was getting pretty tired of the boorish behavior of my fellow fans in the Right Field Pavillions. I mean, are beach balls really that entertaining? Especially in a game where the bases were loaded 3 times and the Dodgers had a grand slam? but maybe I'm just mad cause I'm too short to see if everyone stands up.

Palos Verdes Little League
On Saturday I went with my sister to watch my little cousin play T-ball in a local Little League. It only took like 15 seconds before we were totally entranced by the game and yelling directions to the kids on the field. The first thing you notice, is that this is NOT baseball, this is an excersise in ego stroking. The first inning, every player gets an at-bat no matter what the plays are. Some players use a Tee, some get a pitching machine...and no one keeps score (my aunt calls it PV rules).

But that didn't keep us from totally yelling "The play is at SECOND!!! Throw to Second!!!!" or "Don't run with the ball, throw it!!!!" or "GO! GO! Home Home!" It took me a while to realize that the coaches weren't even telling the kids what to do. Just my sister and I being RABID.

My cousin was on 3rd and we were along the third base line...he said to his coach, "Do I have to run home?" My sister immediately says, "YES, PJ, you will HUSTLE!!!!" On the last play he stood still while a runner moved to second and the batter got to first. But, to his credit, earlier in the game he got the runner out at second, and as the last play of the game he hit a grand slam. Not too shabby for T-ball. But I definitely am that girl, once again.

Napoleonic ERA

On Saturday I went to the Getty and saw the Jacques-Louis David: Empire to Exile exhibit. The first time there had EVER been a David exhibit in the US. Can you believe that?

Do you ever somehow just kind of find yourself transfixing on one period in time? I've never been all that into the Napoleonic Era, but all of a sudden, It's creeping into my pop culture choices. In the past month, besides viewing this exhibit, I'm reading Stendhal's Le Rouge et Le Noir (a bit post Napoleon, I'll grant...)and I've watched the whole Sharpe series and viewed Vanity Fair again. Just a strange convergence.

A discussion with a friend today about Lancaster County Ice Cream (Produced by the Amish...I tried to find a site to make a link, but then it occured to me that the amish more than likely wouldn't HAVE a site...) made me a little nostalgic for Rita's Water Ices that I enjoyed so much while I was in Philly. There was nothing like slurping down a passion fruit gelato made fresh from the fruit after a long hot day tracting the Philly streets in bass flats, panty hose and a DRESS! Open from like April to October, the seasonal treats made my day more than once. I even ate a modified philly sandwich today and pondered going back there for the first time in 7 years. Gads.

Now that Blogger and Hello aren't FREAKING out like they were last week, I can finally proclaim that I MISSED THE MEMO that went around saying Eric Roberts is the new must-have cameo for every video. In the space of less than half an hour, while surfing channels, momentarily saw him in a video for The Killers and Mariah Carey. Don't even bother explaining it to me, because I don't WANT to get it. So everyone knows if a Steve McQueen movie is on TV, I have to watch it. Well, usually it's The Getaway or some other one, that I don't really like. Today I chanced upon Nevada Smith, which I kinda ignored in the ol' survey of McQueen's oevure that my sis and I conducted back in college, because, I assumed it was just another prison flick. Anyone ever noticed that all his films are prison movies? That means no chicks in the film either. Well, I stand corrected...in this one...he has a love interest IN PRISON. And it's a girl.

In honor of my newly emerging food obsessions, I'll list a couple more foods that I'm eating a lot of...inexplicably. These are clearly foods I don't mind eating, but don't recall craving. It's not like my Cousin Athena that will ONLY eat BRC burritos from El Pollo Loco.

1. Wheat Thins and Diet Cola...Maybe because I've been in too many offices the past few weeks, but this seems to be my pick-me-up fuel of choice.

I am not particularly a chocolate freak as girls can be. But whenever these little buggers come back in the store it's like this manic thing and I have to have one EVERY DAY. This week, I've probably had 3 or 4. I like to refrigerate them so that the creme is more solidified--if they even make it to the fridge! My roommate likes the mini-eggs with the crackling outer layer. I admit, if there's nothing else to eat in the house, I have been known to partatke--of the whole bag. But I swear I'm not a chocolate craver. Would I be like this if this stuff was available all year round? And who knew Cadbury and Schweppes were a congolmerate? Chocolate and ginger ale?

A Heartbreaking work...

Rodney, I want to put you in my pocket and take you home with me.

The emotional hell this guy has been to is incredible. He's everywhere in the histories of musical acts that matter, but literally has been left in the dust by everyone from his family to his celebrity friends. If you don't feel unqualified pathos for this poor man, you just have no soul. It just goes to show that you can be on top of the world and bottomed out at the same time.

Qur'an- Spanish Translation

Why am I doing this? Couple of reasons. To help me keep my Spanish up. Ever since the mission, I always read the Book of Mormon in either Spanish or French. Also because I'm kinda way into that whole Medieval Arabic Influence on Spain--partially because of the Family History thing--I'm descendant from Ferdinand III (The Saint) of Castile and Leon.

And also because I believe that the problem with the Arab world today is that so many followers of Islam are illiterate, and not able to read the words of the Qur'an for themselves. Instead, they rely on what others tell them Islam should be, and as a result it has become a twisted version of what was is in reality a peaceful, charitable religion. We would all benefit from having read it, so we can understand eachother.

So, we have this friend Blakey-boo. My best friend, my brother, Blake and Rumpy were on our way back from dining at what was at one time (and may still be) the highest volume In-n-Out in the chain. (BTW--The URL is in-n-out.com. I typed something else in once and got an eyeful.) Out of nowhere (as is often his wont) Blake asks us...."Hey guys, why do they call it 'The Clap'?" This in a car full of Mormons.

After a pause to absorb the non sequitur-ness of it all, there was some speculation...maybe in olden times people had to clap to warn others they had the disease, like a leper with a bell, someone suggested. Well, we Googled it. Apparently back in the 17th century there was a woman named Mother Clap that ran a homosexual brothel in London who was put on trial. And also, according to Wikipedia, it could derive from the Old French clapier meaning "brothel", which itself derived from the Provençal for "rabbit burrow."

The Most Romantic Place I've Ever Been...

But this park was in one of the areas in my sister's mission, so she wanted to show it to us. At 7am. Boy am I glad we went. It just goes to show that I have really bad instincts. If I had had it my way, I would have missed out on the best part of the trip.

So listening to the radio today, I chanced upon "Jesse's Girl" by Rick Springfield, which I love. It has to do with this mythic Mix Tape that my Dad made for this trip to Baja in 1982, and event which still retains the title of Best Family Trip Ever. So whatevs, singing along in my mind, and the song ends, and I realize that I'm listening to Indie 103, and more specifically, Jonsey's Jukebox. That means that Steve Jones, a member of The Sex Pistols, was playing Rick Springfield for the listening pleasure of his radio audience.

I'm sorry but I just can't wrap my head around that. If those two musicians had a mano a mano encounter back in 1982, let's say while riding ATVs in Baja, I can only imagine that Jonesy would in a matter of seconds, jump off his ATV, wrestle Rick to the ground, and stab him in the eye with a disembodied foot Jonsey'd felt the need to cut off a chicken he'd seen running around in front of a fireworks stand. Never in a million years would I think he'd be promoting that music to the peoples of LA and Orange County.

I have an addiction, let's just get it out on the table.

I have been coveting this bikini for a year. It's called Deauville (That was the clincher!) by Salinas and apparently featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 2003 (I didn't know that till today). I finally bought it for $30 instead of $120 last week at Loehmann's while I was shopping for a dress to wear to my brother's wedding. I got it in a medium because that was the only one they had, and because I'm 20 lbs over weight right now. I figured I could use it to inspire me to work out...until I tried it on and looked fabulous in it already! Make my freaking day. Punxsutawney Phil may still be hiding out, but it's open bikini season!
